"An Illustrated Guide to Grassroots Mapping with Balloons and Kites"

Public Lab, 2010

What? A detailed set of instructions, including supply list, for creating aerial images of a geography, which could be anything from a neighborhood to a waterbody to a backyard.

Why? While services such as Google and Bing can provide maps of much of the world, they're not alway up-to-date, and they do not map all areas at the same quality. Creating aerial images of a geography, either to use on their own or as the base for a larger mapping project, can be a powerful tool to document real-time conditions, including flooding, illegal dumping, and vacant land.
